Here's a little more about the YWCA Greater Baltimore:
Local, national, and international scope
Founded in 1883, the YWCA Greater Baltimore serves Baltimore City, Baltimore County, northern Anne Arundel County, and Harford County. We are affiliated with YWCA USA, which has 2.6 million members in 260 local associations. We are also part of the World YWCA, which has 25 million members in 122 countries working to advance the welfare of women worldwide. The YWCA is the oldest women's organization in the U.S.
Programs
The YWCA offers a variety of programs in the areas of affordable childcare, supportive housing, the economic empowerment and advancement of women, and racial justice.
From our inception, the YWCA has offered housing and services to meet the needs of at-risk women and children. Currently, our Druid Heights Transitional Housing Program provides housing and a rich set of supportive services for 23 families with children in West Baltimore. Our upcoming Arbutus Permanent Supportive Housing Program for chronically homeless women in Baltimore County, opening in May 2011, will provide an innovative supportive housing model in a facility renovated to meet stringent green standards.
The YWCA's comprehensive affordable daycare programs at the Upton Childcare Center in Baltimore City and the North County Childcare Center in northern Anne Arundel County provide year-round, all-day care to toddlers, helping working families make ends meet.
Our school-age childcare programs provide before- and after-school care to children ages 5 to 12 in nine public elementary schools in Baltimore County, Harford County, and northern Anne Arundel County.
The YWCA is dedicated to working locally and regionally to move our society toward full realization of racial justice and equity. We are currently seeking funding for our Hearts and Minds Project, a multifacted initiative to use education, advocacy, and community organizing to advance efforts to eliminate racism.
